4 C's - Your Guide To Buying a Diamond

CutColorClarityCarat

4 C’s were created by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) and became a standard for diamond grading worldwide. The EGL (European Gemological Society) gradings are widely used in the U.S. as well. We carry GIA and EGL certified loose diamonds.

Cut

Diamonds can be cut into many different shapes:

Diamond Shapes

For a diamond of any shape, cut is the most important of the four C's as it affects the diamond's brilliance, dispersion of light ("fire"), and scintillation ("sparkle"). An ideal cut creates a diamond of perfect proportions, angles, and finish, and maximizes the beauty of the diamond.

Color

Best diamonds are colorless or near colorless.GIA grades diamonds from colorless to yellow, starting with D and finishing with Z.

Colorless: D (0+) - F (1+)
Near colorless:G (1 ) - J (4 )
Slightly tinted : K (5 ) - M (7 )
Very light yellow:N (8 ) - R (12)
Light yellow- yellow:S (13) - Z (20)

Diamonds of strong and pure colors, such as blue, yellow, green, and pink, are called fancy diamonds and are very rare.

Clarity

Clarity grading and price of a diamond depends on the amount and visibility of inclusions in the stone. The fewer the inclusions, the more beautiful the diamond will be. Flawless diamonds are extremely rare and expensive.

Carat

Weight of a diamond is measured in carats. When choosing between two diamonds, sacrifice the carat-weight for a better color, clarity, and cut.
